Sāthi Sansār
Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal, is a landlocked sovereign nation located in South Asia. It is located in the Himalayas and bordered to the north by the People's Republic of China, and to the south, east, and west by the Republic of India.
Unfortunately for the United Nations it is considered one of the poorest countries in the world and barely developed: in relation to the Human Development Index (IHD) is in position 107 among 135 countries that make up the standings. According to the Human Development Report (2010) of the UNDP, Nepal has a PIB per capita of 1,189 $, life expectancy at birth of 67.5 years and an illiteracy rate of 39.7% between the age of 14.
Concerning to disability, it has been documented a total prevalence of disabilities in Nepal between 2 and 5%. Of the total of disability, 31% belong to the category of multiple disabilities (mobility, speech, vision and mental retardation), representing 28% of disabilities related to movement, and 48% related to hearing and speech.
Nepal officially recognized the human rights of people with disabilities in 1981. In 1982 a law was approved for the protection and social assistance for disabled (Disabled Persons Protection and Welfare Act 1982 DPWA).
Currently the DPWA and unfortunately the laws are not implemented yet. Nepal is also a signatory of international declarations of Salamanca and "Education for All", which underpin the provision of educational services to all without discriminating, according to physical condition, mental, emotional, social or linguistic.
The lack of economic resources, political instability and lack of commitment by the government have been and are the reasons why these laws exist only "on paper." From 1990 until now, the growing of humanitarian organizations have exerted pressure to rescue and restore the provision of the services stipulated in the law, but the situation is still precarious.
Sathi Sansar, meaning a "World Friend" is an NGO (non-governmental organization for development) working in Nepal since 2004. Its mission, despite the current situation in the country, is the sustainable and humanitarian work to serve the underprivileged children of Nepal in relation to disabilities and the risk of social exclusion.
